Solo Travel Guide to Calgary

This southern Alberta city is the perfect stopover for a trip to Banff National Park or Canada road trip. Use this solo guide to experience my favorite Calgary highlights!

Calgary Tower

This iconic Calgary monument stands at 626 feet – that’s taller than the Space Needle in Seattle!

Calgary Tower is similar to the Space Needle in that you can take an elevator to the top circular level. The city views from the top are spectacular!

And brave souls can snag a picture on the transparent floor! I had to sit down and scoot back over the clear space…it’s nerve-wracking to say the least!

St. George’s Island

By far my favorite part of Calgary!

This expansive park is actually an island in the middle of the Bow River that runs through the city.

Enjoy the beautiful bridges, playgrounds, art installations, and walking/biking trails all over the island. This is a stunning example of green space in the middle of a bustling city!

Intentional traveler tip:

For the best views of St. George’s Island and the river, book a stay at the sleek, modern Alt Hotel Calgary East Village.

The rooms are beautiful and environmentally friendly, and meal packages are available for breakfast in the lobby restaurant, Chix Eggshop. And for you Tesla drivers, use the supercharger in their underground parking lot for a full charge every morning!

Kayak down the Bow River

This is the perfect group or solo activity to cool down during the Canadian summer months.

The Paddle Station provides all the equipment you need for a peaceful adventure that ends at their dock on St. George’s Island.

You can see the BEST views of the Calgary skyline from your vantage point on the river!

Central Library

When I tell you this is one of the most stunning libraries I’ve EVER seen!

Before you even enter the building, you’ll be blown away by the massive “drinking birdy” statues in front of the library. The interior features educational and art exhibits on different floors, gorgeous wood architecture, and a darling children’s book area featuring paper cranes on the walls!

You’ll find great study, work, and reading areas at Central Library, plus incredible community programming and a lovely peaceful atmosphere – the perfect place to spend a chill or rainy travel day.

Parlour Ice Cream

Make sure you pay this ice cream shop a visit, no matter what time of year you’re in Calgary!

Parlour Ice Cream uses locally sourced ingredients for their unique ice cream flavors. I can tell you first hand that they are DELICIOUS!

Olympic Plaza

You won’t regret spending a couple hours or even a picnic in this unique plaza. Explore the statue space, splash in the reflection pool, and if you’re lucky, enjoy some live music on the square!

Intentional traveler tip:

See how many of these little guys you can find peeking out from the wall in Olympic Plaza!

There’s something special about this energetic city that you just have to feel for yourself. Calgary offers the perfect combination of nature and open air and modern architecture and technology. She’s a must-see destination for your next trip to AB, CA!
