If you know me at all, you know that I love experiencing history and culture, especially on my travels.
Monterey, California is steeped in beautiful history, and the Old Monterey Inn is part of that story. This bed and breakfast maintained its historic charm and enhanced and is the most delightful place to stay in Monterey!
Classic Elevated Hospitality
The minute you step in the door, you’re greeted by English Tudor charm and the friendliest innkeeper! Ying is attentive and sweet and will give you a tour of your home away from home.
She’ll show you to your romantic guest room and ask for your breakfast preferences. Gourmet breakfast is included every day of your stay!
I stayed in the Rookery, which rests on the top floor and boasts a skylight, cozy fireplace, and lovely bird-themed decor.
Ying can also provide recommendations for local activities and sites that are all within an easy distance from the inn. It’s just a couple blocks from historic downtown Monterey!
Relax in the English gardens after full days of kayaking in the bay, hiking in Point Lobos, or visiting the world-famous aquarium.
The inn boasts over an acre of land to explore, which is a rare perk of property in Monterey! I relished this natural oasis tucked away from the busyness of town.
Step Back in Time
The Martin family stopped briefly in Monterey on their way to San Francisco and the Gold Rush in 1865. They climbed to the top of a hill, had a picnic lunch, fell in love with the Monterey land, and decided to stay.
The Old Monterey Inn is the original home of the first mayor of Monterey, Carmel Martin, grandson of the Martin family. His wife, Lydia, loved English Tudor architecture. Her touch is evident in all the original and restored elements of the 1929 building today!
The manor still stands on the very same hill where the Martin family picnicked that day in 1865. It was transformed into a bed and breakfast in 1978 and has been impeccably preserved ever since.
The Most Unique Stay
During my travels, I’ve encountered many cookie cutter accommodations that are new but feel empty and impersonal. Unlike other hotels, the Old Monterey Inn is a refreshing dive into the rich history of this town that you’ll absolutely fall in love with.
There’s something magical about this inn that you HAVE to experience for yourself. I wish I could have stayed there longer to keep feeling that magic.
When making plans for your visit to Monterey, this beautiful bed and breakfast is the first place you should make reservations!
I guarantee you’ll feel right at home at the Old Monterey Inn! Visit their website to book your stay today.
